Gettler is the tenth and final villain of Casino Royale. As Bond and Vesper Lynd are sailing into Venice, Vesper notices a mysterious figure appearing on the side of the canal. Wearing a panama hat and blacked out lens, Vespers face drops where she realises that he’s been sent by Mr White to complete her end of the deal; the handover of the poker winnings to free her kidnapped boyfriend, and for saving Bonds life.

When Bond later realises Vespers hidden agenda, he runs to the bank to find her but without success. Luckily spotting her red dress walking down a side street, he follows her to an abandoned courtyard. As Vesper is about to give the money to Gettler, Bond is spotted so Gettler retreats into a building under renovation with Vesper as his hostage. Bond enters and takes on each of Gettlers goons until he reaches the man himself. They fight, and Gettler loses the case containing the winnings into the water below (to later be in the hands of Mr White). Bond manages to gain the upper hand, and shoots Gettler in his right eye with a large nail gun. §
